The access network challenge
EON Technology supplies multivendor optics for FTTx access networks: GPON and XGS-PON SFP modules for the OLT, BiDi links that run on a single fiber, and 1G/10G uplinks toward aggregation, with compatibility validated by model, firmware, port and optical part number. You standardize on one optics partner across OLT brands instead of one price list per vendor.
The access network is the last mile: it connects the subscriber to the operator’s network. It is where the most fiber and the most ports get deployed, so every optics decision is multiplied by thousands of links. Three things decide the outcome here: cost per link, fiber savings and compatibility with the OLT already installed.
Typical architecture and where the optics fit
- FTTx / PON: GPON (2.5G downstream / 1.25G upstream) and XGS-PON (10G symmetric) managed from the OLT. The GPON SFP sits in the OLT PON port and feeds the splitter tree toward the ONTs; class B+ and C+ optics set the available power budget.
- OLT uplinks: 10G with SFP+ toward aggregation; 1G with SFP in lower-density sites.
- Point-to-point links: BiDi to occupy a single fiber per link, which matters when the plant is limited. See the 1G SFP BiDi and 10G SFP+ BiDi product families.
The upper layers (aggregation, distribution, core) are covered in solutions for ISPs and operators.
Recommended transceivers
- SFP modules (1G), including BiDi variants, for access and low-density uplinks.
- SFP+ modules (10G) for OLT uplinks and aggregation.
Before ordering, have at hand the OLT model and firmware version, the PON port type (GPON or XGS-PON) and class (B+ or C+), the split ratio the power budget must cover, and for uplinks the target speed, fiber type and distance. With that we confirm the optical part number and whether the platform needs recoding. Mixed plants, where a GPON OLT is being migrated to XGS-PON on the same outside plant, benefit from coexistence planning: the two technologies use different wavelengths and can share the ODN through a WDM coexistence element, so the migration happens port by port instead of all at once.
Why EON Technology
We deliver multivendor access optics with compatibility validated by model, firmware, port and optical part number for the main OLT and aggregation platforms. Some platforms report third-party optics as unsupported; when the OLT or another platform does, transceiver recoding adapts and validates the module, with 90-day service coverage. You get significant savings against the OEM part and engineering support before and after purchase, backed by a 1- to 5-year product warranty. EON serves Latin America and Spain from a centralized operation in Colombia. Schedule a proof of concept, review the compatibility matrix or talk to an engineer.
